The Rhythm of Nomadic Life

Our days begin early, before the sun touches the edge of the sky. With the first light, we leave our Ger, the traditional round tents that have served as our mobile homes for centuries. The air is cool and clear, filled with the scent of wild thyme and the distant call of an eagle. The cashmere goats, our faithful companions and livelihood, are already waiting for us. Each of these special animals carries a layer of finest down hair under its rough outer coat — the precious cashmere. It is a miracle of nature that these delicate creatures are able to withstand the harsh climate of the Mongolian plateau. Throughout the year, we accompany our herds on their search for the best pastures. We move with the seasons, following ancient routes that our ancestors have traveled. This nomadic way of life is more than just tradition — it is the key to producing the finest cashmere.

The Art of Cashmere Gathering

The cycle of cashmere production is closely interwoven with the rhythm of nature. In the harsh winter, when icy winds sweep across the steppe, our goats develop their dense undercoat. It is their natural protection against the cold, finer than a human hair and incredibly warming. With the first breath of spring begins the most important time of the year for us: the cashmere harvest. It is a celebration of community, where families and friends gather to work together. The air is filled with laughter, stories, and the gentle bleating of goats. Combing the goats is an art passed down from generation to generation. With gentle, practiced movements, we separate the precious down hair from the coarser outer coat. It is an act of care and respect for our animals. Each goat is treated individually, their well-being is our top priority.

From the Steppe to the World

The collected fibers are carefully packed into sacks. It's amazing how light and airy the cashmere is — a sack full of fibers hardly weighs more than a feather. Yet in these inconspicuous flakes lies the wealth of our culture and the foundation of our existence. After the harvest, the cashmere's journey from the steppe to the world begins. In small workshops on the edge of the steppe or in larger factories in the cities, the raw cashmere is sorted, cleaned, and spun into the finest yarn. Many of these operations are run by families who have never forgotten their nomadic roots. The processing of cashmere is a mixture of ancient tradition and modern technology. The sorting of the fibers is still done by hand, a work that requires the highest precision and years of experience. With years of trained eyes, one distinguishes the finest color differences of the fibers. It is very important to sort them properly before washing the fibers. The cleaning is done in crystal clear water, often sourced from the mountain springs of Mongolia. Dirt and coarse hairs are gently removed until only the purest wool remains. It's like washing the essence of our landscape itself — gentle and respectful. Once the fibers have been carefully cleaned, the coarse fibers are separated from the high-quality fine cashmere in the combing mill. With each additional pass through the combing machine, the fibers become purer and finer. At this point, the material has lost at least 40% of its original weight. The finest fibers are sorted out — the finer the cashmere, the more valuable it is. The spinning of the yarn is a fascinating process. In some workshops, traditional spinning wheels are still used, their rhythmic hum reminiscent of the steppe's buzz in the summer wind. In larger operations, modern machines are used, operated by craftsmen who master both the ancient art of spinning and the intricacies of modern technology. Dyeing the cashmere yarn is like painting a picture with the colors of our homeland. Many dye houses use natural dyes extracted from native plants. The deep blue of the summer sky, the gentle green of spring pastures, the warm brown of autumn earth — all these colors are found in our cashmere. We always strive to offer untreated natural yarn.

At the end of this long process stands a product of incomparable quality and beauty. Each thread of our cashmere yarn carries the story of our homeland. It is a piece of living cultural heritage that combines the warmth of Mongolian hospitality and the wildness of untouched nature. The next time you hold a piece of cashmere in your hands, think of the vast steppe, the patient goats, and the nomads who make this miracle possible. In every thread lives the spirit of Mongolia — wild, free, and infinitely beautiful. For us, cashmere production is more than just a craft or a source of income. It is a way of life that connects us to our ancestors, our environment, and our traditions. In a rapidly changing world, it preserves a piece of timelessness, a connection to the eternal rhythms of nature.

Sustainability and Future

Yet, like so much in our modern world, this traditional way of life faces challenges. Climate change is altering our landscapes, making pastures infertile and water sources scarce. The allure of modern city life attracts many young people. Despite these challenges, cashmere production remains an important part of our culture and economy. Innovative projects combine the knowledge of nomads with sustainable production methods. Cooperatives enable us to achieve fair prices for our cashmere. Educational programs teach the younger generation how to harmonize our traditional practices with modern environmental protection.
